Most of my birthdays pass quietly, but this year and last were different. Last year was the party where I celebrated the big 5-0 with friends and family. I was celebrated and encouraged by those who took their time to be there and the written words they gifted me are a treasure.

The memories and sadness come sporadically. On Saturday, I glanced at my watch and saw the date – June 23. It was my dad’s birthday. He would have been 88 that day.
Ours was never a close relationship. There’s a lot of baggage and much left unresolved. By the time I was ready to start tackling those difficult memories from my earlier years, my dad’s dementia had progressed significantly. It was impossible to get answers or have discussions.
